The automatic alarm came in around 10 a.m. When firefighters arrived, there were flames coming through the roof. It is still unclear where in the house the fire started.

Two children who live in the house were outside with their dogs when firefighters responded, and nobody had to be rescued, Taylor said.

"When we arrived, it was already on the second floor," said firefighter Jeff Fernandes, one of the first to arrive on the scene. "I grabbed a couple of these young guys and we started hitting it hard."

Between 60 and 85 firefighters responded from Rye, Port Chester, Harrison, West Harrison, the Town of Mamaroneck, the Village of Mamaroneck and Greenwich.

One firefighter from Rye, who has been with the department for more than 20 years, was injured while he was pulling the ceiling in the top floor and the roof came down on him.

"As a precaution, we took him out and transported him to the hospital, but he doesn't seem to be injured," Taylor said.

The various departments were able to coordinate well together to get the fire under control, according to First Assistant Chief Peter Cotter. Taylor said that the residents were able to secure some of their belongings from the house, but will not be able to re-enter for some time.

"Nobody's going in there right now. There's very heavy smoke damage, heavy fire damage, water damage," Taylor said.

"Those wood shingles look beautiful, but they make it tough. But we had a good attack and we were able to get it under control," Fernandes said.
