PORT CHESTER, N.Y. An outbreak of robberies has taken place in Port Chester in the past week, confounding police who say there does not seem to be any connection or method of prevention.
Theyre happening from Midland Avenue to the movie theater so its not like I can say its happening in one spot, said Lt. James Ladeairous, spokesman for the Port Chester Police Department. Theyre all reporting it thank goodness, as far as we know, but its almost like open season in that area.
On Aug. 9 at 2:36 a.m. a 24-year-old victim said he was walking into his apartment on the right side of a house on Fox Island Road when two males were standing there with a gun. He told them he didn't live there and the men took his keys and cell phone before running off. The victim described one robber as a black skinny male around 511 or 6-feet tall, wearing a black ski mask and black hoodie. The other was described as a tall and skinny black male, wearing a black hoodie and holding a black revolver.
Then on Aug. 10 at around 8:40 p.m. at nearby Columbus Park, two 13-year-olds and an 11-year-old reported they were at the basketball court waiting for a ride home when they were approached by three black male teenagers who searched their bags and took a silver necklace.
The next day, at around 1:13 a.m., a 35-year-old resident said he was walking down Midland Avenue when he was approached by four black males and two black females. One of the males grabbed the victim from behind while another took his watch, $200 from his wallet, a phone and his passport. The six then ran away toward Weber Drive.
Just a few minutes later, at 1:21 a.m. Aug. 11, a 35-year-old said he was on the ground floor near the movie theater near the elevator by Marshalls when he was approached by two black males and one struck him on the right side of his face with an object. The robber then showed him a gun and hit him again with it. He threatened the victim then went through the mans pockets and took an iPhone, $200 from his wallet and ran away.
It seems like theyre coming up from behind, so [victims] are not getting a great idea of who the person might be. If someone sticks a gun in your face even if hes five-foot-five hes going to look six-foot-five, said Ladeairous. Hopefully we get someone and can put it all together.
Police suggested residents dont walk alone, especially late at night, and be aware of your surroundings. The best thing is to have other people with you, dont go off on your own, said Ladeairous.
