Port Chester Man Charged With Assault On Child

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. – A Port Chester man was arrested on a felony assault charge Tuesday for allegedly hitting his 4-year-old child, police said.

Port Chester Police received a report around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday of a man beating a child at a home at 316 Westchester Ave. The child was found with his mother, and police said they could see swelling, bruising and redness on his face. The woman told police the child’s father was upstairs.

David Barriga, 38, told police he was trying to put the child’s sneakers on, but the boy was being difficult and flailing his arms around, according to Lt. Jim Ladeairous, spokesman for the Port Chester Police Department. The man then hit his child three times in the face with his hand. Barriga was arrested on a charge of assault in the third degree.

Emergency Medical Services were called and took the child to Greenwich Hospital, “Just to make sure everything was all right other than the redness and bruising,” Ladeairous said.

Barriga was arraigned Wednesday in Port Chester and did not make bail. He was sent to county jail and is due back in village court Thursday.
