PORT CHESTER, N.Y. – Immediately following the nor’easter snowstorm in Port Chester, a 26-year-old man allegedly burglarized homes of up to $3,400 worth of electronics and jewelry in his own neighborhood, police said.
Salvatore Vizzari, 26, of 15 Field Place, was charged with two counts of felony second-degree burglary and one count of misdemeanor criminal trespass.
Police first received a call about 9 a.m. Nov. 8 from a 29-year-old resident of Field Place who said she saw a man trying to break into her basement door. She told police what he was wearing, and officers found Vizzari nearby holding a shovel, said Lt. James Ladeairous, spokesman for the Port Chester Police Department.
Vizzari told police he was going around his neighborhood asking people if they needed their property shoveled following the snowstorm the day before. Ladeairous said police became suspicious as Vizzari’s story continued to change. He was brought to department headquarters and photographed. The 29-year-old woman who initially called identified his photo, Ladeairous said. Vizzari was charged with third-degree criminal trespass in that incident.
While he was at headquarters, a resident of Quintard Drive, near to Field Place, called to report a burglary. She told police she came home from running errands that morning and found a ski glove she didn’t recognize on her daughter’s bed. She also found that her daughter’s Apple Macbook Pro laptop had been stolen along with several other objects. The total amount stolen was valued at $3,400.
Police then received another complaint from a different Field Place resident, who reported a burglary of about $1,500 worth of belongings.
Ladeairous said police got a search warrant for Vizzari’s home, where they found all the proceeds from the burglaries. He was then charged with the burglary felonies.
“Because it was in his own backyard, which I seldom see here in Port Chester, the judge set his bail at $125,000 cash and $250,000 bond,” Ladeairous said. Vizzari was being held at the Westchester County Jail in Valhalla.
