PORT CHESTER, N.Y. The former assistant manager of BarTaco in Port Chester was arraigned in Port Chester Village Court on Wednesday and charged with stealing nearly $80,000 from the restaurant over a five-month period, according to Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore.
Evan Loring, 28, of 4 Vaz Place in Wallingford, Conn., faces charges of grand larceny in the second degree and falsifying business records in the first degree.
Loring was hired as a bartender at BarTaco, located at 1 Willett Ave., after being released from his job as an assistant football coach at Harvard University, according to a release from the District Attorney's Office. He was soon promoted to the position of assistant manager.
He is accused of accessing the restaurants computerized sales system to remove items from customers orders to change the cash receipt amount beginning in October 2011 and continuing until April of this year. According to the release, Loring pocketed approximately $80,000 in a five-month period while falsifying business records to hide the theft.
In March, the restaurant contacted Port Chester Police and an investigation began with the assistance of the Economics Crimes Bureau of the Investigations Division of the District Attorneys Office.
Loring was being held Wednesday in Westchester County Jail on a $5,000 bond and is due in court Oct. 11. If convicted, Loring faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in state prison.
Assistant District Attorney Robert Mayes of the Economic Crimes Bureau is prosecuting the case.
