Peter Martins, 71, of Irvington, was arrested on Friday, Dec. 29, following a traffic crash in Ardsley, Ardsley police said.
Following the accident, Martins was charged with DWI and released. He will appear in court at 2 p.m. to answer the misdemeanor charge.
The Danish-born Martins, who was a principal dancer and became ballet master in chief in 1989, wrote in his resignation letter that "largely anonymous and decades-old accusations of sexual harassment or physical mistreatment of dancers or others" had inflicted "a tremendous toll of turmoil, disruption and expense" on the ballet.
"It also has exacted a painful toll on me and my family," Martins wrote.
In the letter, he denied any misconduct and said he was cooperating with the investigation.
Martins' December arrest is not his first for DWI. He was arrested in 2011 at a DWI checkpoint near Yonkers by the Westchester County Police. He pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of driving while impaired.
