Authorities Track Down Westchester Man Charged With Stabbing Pit Bull

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y.  -- A 26-year-old man was arrested and charged Tuesday after the Humane Law Enforcement Unit of the SPCA and Yonkers Police say he stabbed an eight-month pit bull in the back.

Deshawn Williams of Yonkers was charged with animal cruelty. For months following the incident, Williams could not be located, staying under the radar to avoid arrest, the SPCA said.

The SPCA of Westchester’s HLE Unit were alerted on Jan. 3 that a pit bull had been stabbed on New Year's Day and was bleeding from the injury. The anonymous caller added that the dog was still at 36 Victor Street for the past two days without any medical attention, the SPCA said.

Upon discovering the injured dog, authorities took control of the puppy. Yonkers Animal Shelter also responded and transported the pit bull puppy for veterinarian care, the SPCA said.

Following an examination by a veterinarian at Central Animal Hospital, the dog was found to have a deep stab wound to the left back area, the SPCA said.

The puppy remained hospitalized for several days before being transported to the Yonkers Animal Shelter, the SPCA said. The dog has since been adopted and is fully recovered and doing well, the SPCA said.

“We are grateful to citizens who report these incidents as quickly as possible,” said Shannon Laukhuf, Executive Director of the SPCA of Westchester. “Time is of the essence in animal abuse cases, and our officers are ready to respond.”
