RYE BROOK, N.Y. -- A California family is offering a $25,000, no questions asked reward for the return of sentimental, valuable jewelry stolen from them at the Hilton Westchester in Rye Brook.
Blue sapphire diamond earrings and a diamond ring were stolen from a purse while a family was attending a wedding on Saturday, Nov. 12, said private investigator Geoff Doyle of Doyle Carden Group in Manhattan.
The mother gave her daughter the heirloom earrings to wear during the event, Doyle said.
"They were heavy, so the daughter took them off and the gave them to her mother to hold," Doyle said.
The earrings were placed into a pouch and then inside a purse, where the mother's diamond ring of 37 years also was hidden.
"She left the purse on the table to dance and when she returned, it was on the floor, open," Doyle said.
The family is offering a large reward because the jewelry is a family heirloom and has sentimental value.
"They just want their stuff back. No questions asked," he said.
The earrings are described as having a five carat, blue sapphire, surrounded by 15 marquise cut diamonds. The ring is a three carat diamond.
The family retained the services of a private investigation firm after consulting with their lawyer over the best course of action to take. They filed a police report on Nov. 19.
"Our guys are working on it and we’re hopeful we can come to a positive resolution for them," said Rye Brook Police Detective Sgt. Terence Wilson. "Unfortunately we got a little bit of late start. It wasn't reported to us until nine days after it happened. That puts us at a disadvantage. Their main concern is to recover the property because they're family heirlooms. We sympathize with that."
The incident happened between 10-11 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom. The Lerer wedding had 534 guests. "A lot of people who attended the wedding were not from around here," said Wilson, who noted a California driver's license was also reported missing from the small purse.
Anyone who was at the Lerer's wedding on Nov. 12 wedding at the Hilton Westchester and has any information about the missing jewelry can call Doyle at 212-896-3962 or Rye Brook Police Detective Sgt. Terence Wilson at (914) 939-8392.
