Thomas A. Sorbella, 85, Former Port Chester Resident

NEW FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Thomas A. "Deady" Sorbella of New Fairfield, a former Port Chester resident, died July 27. He was 85.

Sorbella was born Oct. 11, 1928, in St. Mary's, Pa., to James Lewis Sorbella and Rose Marie Caretti Sorbella. They settled in Port Chester in 1930. He attended Port Chester public schools and graduated from Port Chester High School in 1946. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1954 and served in Panama with Battery C 504th Field Artillery Battalion. He played semi-professional football for the Father Alfonso Football team and later coached that team and was voted 1961 Coach of the Year. He refereed with the N.Y. State Association of Football Officials and locally officiated in the Port Chester Midget Football League.He worked for the N.Y. American Water Company until his retirement in 1996. Following his marriage he lived with his wife in Port Chester until 1998 before moving to New Fairfield.

Sorbella is survived by his wife, MaryAnn Braccio Sorbella of New Fairfield; children, Debbie (Cynthia) Sorbella of Brookfield, John (Lisa) Sorbella of Stamford and Rori Sorbella Rasile of New Fairfield; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; brother, James Sorbella; and son-in-law, Walter Rasile.

Calling hours are Wednesday, July 30 from 4 to 8 p.m. A Catholic Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 31 at Corpus Christi Church.
