Maria Varbaro, 84, Former Rye Brook Resident

STERLING, Va. - Maria (Cacciola) Varbaro of Sterling, formerly of Rye Brook, died Sunday, Sept. 7. She was 84.

Varbaro was born Feb. 10, 1930, in Scilla, Reggio Calabria, Italy, to Rocco and Maria Angela Cacciola. She was a school teacher in Italy. She immigrated to the United States and lived in Rye Brook, N.Y., for 37 years, before relocating to Sterling in 2007. She was a parishioner at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church and was a member of the Sterling Senior Center in Virginia. She was a former member of the Mary Help of Christians Sodality in Port Chester- Corpus Christi chapter. She was a past president of the AJP- Senior Center in Rye Brook.

Varbaro is survived by her children, Angelina Crew (David) of Sterling, Va., Rocco Varbaro (Lisa) of Carmel, N.Y., Maria Reilly (Mark) of Lutz, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and sisters, Tina Varbaro (Australia), Erminia Paravizzini (Australia) and Pina Teramo (Italy). She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Anthony Varbaro (Nino); and grandson, Matthew Crew.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12 at Craft Memorial Home, Inc. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13 at Corpus Christi Church, 136 South Regent St., Port Chester. Entombment to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, 1 High St., Rye Brook.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Varbaro’s name to the American Cancer Society to help fight Breast Cancer or to a charity of your choice.
