Jonathan Russell, 93, Of Port Chester, WWII Veteran, Novelist And Poet

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. - Jonathan Russell, a resident of Port Chester and formerly of the United Kingdom, died June 10. He was 93.

Russell was born Dec. 26, 1919, in Bangor, Wales to Allan Russell-Smith and Marie DeLathuy Russell-Smith. He served in the Norwegian Merchant Navy during World War II. He was a published novelist and poet who won numerous awards including the grand prize in 1998 and 1999 from the American Poetry Association. He was admitted to the Academy of American of Poets.

Russell is survived by his wife, Shirley Wolf of Port Chester; daughters, Caroline Russell-Smith of West Sussex, UK, Jacky Madel of Chesham, UK, and Cecelia Russell-Smith of New Jersey; brother, Dewey Russell-Smith of Winchester, UK; sister, Yvonne Hunt of Ilminster, UK; and two granddaughters. He was predeceased by his parents.

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 12 at Greenwood Union Cemetery North St., Rye.
