Ex-Westchester Teaching Assistant ID'd As Man Found Dead At NYC School

A 36-year-old man from Putnam County has been identified as the special education teacher found dead inside a bathroom stall at a school in New York City late last week.

Matthew Azimi died of an apparent heroin overdose at Public School X811 on Longfellow Avenue in the Foxhurst section of the Bronx on Thursday afternoon, Nov. 30, according to multiple reports.

Azimi, who grew up in Carmel Hamlet, graduated in 2008 from Purchase College where he received his Bachelor's degree in Literature. He then earned a Master's in Education and Special Education from Long Island University.

He joined PS X811 in September 2010 after working as a teaching assistant at Mount Pleasant Blythdale UFDS.

Azimi lived in New York City at the time of his death.

Visitation will be Monday, Dec. 4 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesday, Dec. 5 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and again from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at  Beecher Funeral Home, 1 Putnam Ave. in Brewster.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 10 a.m. at St. Lawrence O'Toole Church at 31 Prospect St. in Brewster with Rev. Richard Gill officiating.

Interment will be at St. Lawrence O'Toole Cemetery on Turk Hill Road in Brewster.
