Dr. William Haggerty, 72, Port Chester Native, Dentist

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. – Dr. William Joseph Haggerty, a Port Chester native, died Dec. 21 at his home in Allentown, Pa., surrounded by family, after a battle with ALS. He was 72.

Born Jan. 7, 1940, in Port Chester, he was the son of William Henry and Josephine Broder Haggerty. Raised in Port Chester, he attended St. Mary's School and graduated from Archbishop Stepinac High School in 1957.

Haggerty graduated from St. Michael's College in Colchester, Vt., in 1961 and the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1965. He served in the Navy from 1965 to 1967.

He married Kaye Anderson in 1966. He opened his dental practice in Greenwich, Conn., in 1967. Following retirement in 2001, he and his wife relocated to Allentown. He then began volunteering for the Mercy Centre in Bangkok, Thailand, a charity serving abandoned and abused children.

For 10 years, he traveled to Thailand twice a year. He loved photography, playing tennis and running.

An Eagle Scout, Haggerty was a member of the Order of the Arrow. A member of the American Dental Society, he was a past president of the Western Fairfield County Dental Society and the Greenwich Dental Society in Connecticut.

He served as chairman for the dental campaign of the Greenwich United Way and was a member of the Greenwich Rotary Club, St. Thomas More Catholic Church and the Lehigh Country Club in Allentown. He was a former member of St. Michael's Church in Greenwich and St. Mary's Church in Port Chester.

Haggerty was predeceased by an infant daughter, Sandra Lee; and his parents. He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Shannon (Andrew) Allen, of West Palm Beach, Fla., Jamie (Mark) Bradshaw, of Columbia, Md., and Katie (Brian) Gay, of Fair Haven, N.J.; five grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Sandra (Anthony) Abdalla, of Allentown, and Lola (Richard) Hunt, of Spencerville, Md.

A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Cemetery in Greenwich.
