WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. – Six Westchester communities now have a Municipal Public Fire Protection surcharge listed as a separate charge on their bills, which started June 1. These charges were previously paid by the municipality.
The communities that will see the change include the villages of Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Hastings-On-Hudson, Pelham Manor and Port Chester and the city of New Rochelle.
This selection means that United Water cannot bill the municipality, but rather must bill a surcharge to all the customers for Municipality Public Fire Protection. Any savings must be passed on from the municipality to the customers.
The amount of the surcharge is determined by the size of each customer’s water meter and how many fire hydrants are in their municipality.
While United Water installs the fire hydrants, they do so at the request of each local municipality or fire department. It is the municipality that ultimately determines how many hydrants are installed and the locations.
United Water is also responsible for maintaining the hydrants and their mains and valves, water storage systems and water pressure and flow controlling equipment. The upkeep of the hydrants and equipment is important for both water efficiency and for the ability to protect the community and save lives.
