PORT CHESTER, N.Y. -- It was a new beginning for Damian Rodriguez as he began Port Chester High School and moved on from being the big eighth grader to a young freshman. "It's cool," said Damian, 14, wearing a red baseball cap that matched his Air Jordan sneakers. "I'm glad to get away from all the little kids." Port Chester schools, from elementary to high school, opened their doors Wednesday, and Damian was happy to reach the last stage of his education, even if he was starting at the bottom. "I'll move my way up," he said. "It just takes time." Damian described his first day as a "breeze" with no homework assignments given. He's looking forward to trying out for the basketball and baseball teams later in the year and, other than that, he's just trying to learn the ropes of high school's social order. "I just got to worry about the seniors like my older brother blowing spots," he said, using the lingo for telling a secret.
And, of course, in freshmen fashion, the day didn't pass without an embarrassing moment. "Yeah, I slipped on the steps and dropped all my books," Damian said, taking it in stride. "But it was pretty funny." Did your teenager just start high school? How was his or her first day?
