PORT CHESTER, N.Y. Santa Claus made a special appearance at Open Door Family Medical Center in Port Chester on to distribute gifts to Open Door families.
According to Open Door volunteer coordinator Alicia Ward, Santa takes time out of his busy schedule to visit the good little boys and girls at all four of Open Door's locations across the county. Ward also stated that Open Door hands out more than 2,000 gifts total each holiday season.
Open Door receives donations of both toys and time from many local businesses, schools, and community groups.
"Corporations like IBM and MBIA/Cutwater Assets Management hold toy drives for Open Door," Ward said. "Some employees even help us wrap."
Open Door COO Anita Wilenkin referred to the event as an Open Door tradition.
"Every year we like to do this," Wilenkin said. "It's been going on for over 35 years."
Wilenkin, who joined Open Door in 2008, talked about the importance Open Door places on being there for the community.
"We like to give back to ensure that our families can celebrate the holiday," she said smiling.
Open Door Family Medical Centers strives to serve the "underserved" and "underinsured" within the community, according to its website. The centers were founded more than four decades ago and are now one of the largest health care providers in Westchester, serving more than 40,000 patients countywide.
