Port Chester/Rye NAACP To Host Annual Freedom Fund Luncheon

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. -- The Port Chester/Rye NAACP fifth annual Freedom Fund Luncheon will feature civil rights litigator and advocate Judith Brown-Dianis as the keynote speaker.

Brown-Dianis is the co-director of the Advancement Project and she "played a key role in protecting the rights of people of color in Florida after the 2000 election and in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina," according to a press release. The luncheon is set for noon Saturday at the Copacabana Restaurant at 125 N. Main St. in Port Chester, according to the release. 

Brown Dianis also "has commented extensively on issues of race, voting rights, education, housing and employment, appearing often on MSNBC, CNN, BET and TVOne," according to the release. 

The Robert Brown/M. Paul Redd Freedom Fund Luncheon is "an annual event to recognize the contributions of those in the Port Chester/Rye community who have contributed their time and expertise to help others," according to the release. 

The honorees at this year's luncheon are Hattie Adams, Ida Kilpatrick, Luis Marino and David Thomas, according to the release, and Robert Izard, who was instrumental in the formation of Carver Center, will receive special recognition.

Proceeds for the luncheon go directly to "helping fund the Port Chester/Rye NAACP scholarship fund and many of the activities the branch sponsors during the year," according to the release.
