RYE, N.Y. -- Brian Martinez and a group of youths with the Rye YMCA summer camp dashed across the blistering hot sand at Rye Town Park's Oakland Beach before plunging themselves into the cool waters of the Sound.
"It felt so nice being in the water," said Brian, 14, who lives in Port Chester.
Temperatures hit a high of 98 degrees, which felt more like 104 degrees with the humidity. For Brian and the other day campers, a trip to the beach was just what they needed."We had already been scheduled to come here," said Lou Caratelli, teen outreach director at the Y. "It just sort of worked out with the weather today."
The group of about 30 kids are enrolled in the Y's Adventure Camp program for ages 11 to 14. Every day they take a field trip and there was no better place to be on Friday than the beach.
They spent the day lounging in the shade on the grass and went into the water for an hour at a time when accompanied by two lifeguards who came with the group from the Y."It was hot, but it was fun." said Brian.
The heat will persist through Saturday with an expected high of 96 degrees, but it will feel more like 104 degrees. Theres a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the evening. Sunday the temperatures will drop to 87 degrees.
