PORT CHESTER, N.Y. -- Fifth-grader James Strauch was a little disappointed to find out that he had some extra homework assignments this week.
"I guess since there's no school Thursday and Friday they wanted to make sure the kids got enough homework," said Mary Strauch, whose son James goes to King Street School.
Port Chester students have a four-day weekend coming up with the Rosh Hashanah holiday, though Strauch doesn't necessarily think there should be extra homework.
"I think homework should have a purpose," she said. "There shouldn't just be regular assignments, but high-quality ones."
James, 10, seemed to feel less bothered by the extra workload as he gave it some more thought.
"Well, I'm definitely not a big homework person," he said. "But I guess its a reasonable amount for the beginning of the year."
