PORT CHESTER, N.Y. -- Anthony Olivo knows that brand new isn't always better when it comes to buying furniture, but regardless of personal taste, the prices at the Salvation Army are hard to beat."Some of the things you find here you won't find anywhere else," said Olivo, store manager at the Port Chester Salvation Army. "And they're a fraction of what you would pay at retail store."
The store has a wide selection of secondhand goods from clothing to kitchenware, but its furniture items are what bring in the most money. Here you can find antique wooden cabinets, coffee tables and easy chairs.
But it's not just about getting great deals, it's also supports a cause. The Salvation Army is an international non-profit organization that is founded on Christian faith and community service.
Each of its thrift stores is a major source of financial support for adult rehabilitations centers (ARCs) also run by the organization. The majority of proceeds from the Port Chester store go to benefit the ARC in Mt. Vernon."It's important to give these people opportunities to transition from where they were to supporting themselves," said Olivo.Part of the Salvation Army's rehabilitation program is providing work opportunities for its members, so many of the stores are staffed with people recovering from addiction.
The thrift stores all rely on donated goods, so Olivo urges anyone getting rid of old furniture to consider donating it to the Salvation Army--if it's in good condition, of course. What do you think about the Salvation Army's mission?
