The unique approach has sent this 26-year-old budding rock star viral with 284,247 YouTube subscribers and more than 7.1 million views on his cover of Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse,” posted March 15.
The Stepinac High School graduate posted a cover of Jason Derulo’s “Talk Dirty” on Tuesday,May 6, which has already hit more than 2.1 million views.
After starting the song in the style of the singer, Valbiro’s voice, facial expressions and attitude transition. His “Talk Dirty” cover goes from AC/DC to Ray Charles to Muse and 16 styles in between.
“I never expected what happened with this video to happen,” he said in a thank-you video posted on his Ten Second Songs YouTube page.
Outlets like Rolling Stone, Huffington Post, Perez Hilton and Yahoo News have shared the “Dark Horse” cover, as well as some of Valbiro’s favorite artists, like Type O Negative and Corey Taylor from Slipknot and Stone Sour.
“I was beyond words when it happened,” he said in the video. “Same thing with Boyz II Men and Tech N9ne.
He said he likes the idea that a pop song exposed viewers to artists who don't show up on top 10 radio.
As a student at Corpus Christi Catholic school in Port Chester and then Stepinac High School in White Plains, Valbiro performed in several plays. He started playing base guitar at age 11 and developed his voice after high school.
“We all wanted to be rock stars when we were kids, and I just stuck with it,” he told Daily Voice.
After school, he started 10 Second Songs, a custom song business where he sells short jingles or songs in any style.
“That’s how it started. But it wasn’t until I came up with a cool idea to promote it on YouTube and it went viral. The rest is history," he said.
In addition to creating more Ten Second Songs, Valbiro is working on a new EP and music video with his band, Set the Charge.
Valbiro welcomes suggestions for different styles to use in his videos and used some in his last cover.
"There were a couple of artists that were suggested that I didn’t even really think to include, and because they were suggested, I used them," he said. "Kataklysm, the death metal band, is one."
