“As we all think back on the events of 9/11, 12 years ago, our sorrow over the loss of so many good people should be tempered by the example shown by so many who died, and yet also so many who lived,” said Mayor Neil Pagano in his remarks. “They taught us through their actions that day what it means to be human. They showed us the value of duty, loyalty, self-sacrifice and love. The only way we triumph over terrorism and conquer the senseless tragedy of that horrible day is by celebrating the kindness of the human spirit.”
Gabriella Buccieri sang the National Anthem, and the Port Chester Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance. Following a 21-gun salute, Joe Sabia of the American Legion perform “Taps” and members of the Port Chester Fire Department and Police Department laid a ceremonial wreath near the Memorial. Rev. Hilario Albert of St. Peter’s Church and Pastor Jim O’Hanlon of St. Paul’s Church both said prayers for the victims, survivors and first responders.
“Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning and pure manner,” said Albert in his prayer. “Save us from violence, discord and confusion, from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way.”
“We ask your care and protection for all who serve their community, especially our fire, police and emergency medical responders,” said O’Hanlon. “We vow our support for those who stand up for us, who rush in for us, and for the families who have been left. We pray for all the victims of this day in 2001, and thank you for all who have survived and made a meaningful life.”
The ceremony closed with Buccieri and the Port Chester Girl Scouts performing a rendition of “God Bless America.”
