PORT CHESTER, N.Y. Lillian Teska of Port Chester is working this Thanksgiving. As a matter of fact, Teska has worked every Thanksgiving for the past six years.
"When you're in my business, you don't get days off," Teska said inside of the Port Chester Nursing and Rehab Centre. Teska is one of the many employees at the Centre that works while most enjoy the holidays.
Teska is the director of therapeutic recreation and volunteer services at the Centre located on High Street in Port Chester.
"As some of the only non-invasive staff members, it's our job to make sure that the residents feel comfortable and homey," Teska said. "When the holidays come around, it's doubly important that we do our job.
Teska also mentioned that more than half of the residents spend their holidays at the rehab facility. She also mentioned that each resident is allowed to bring two or three guests. Teska confirmed that Thursday the Centre would be entertaining "at least 40 people."
Teska, like most of the Centre's staff, is working a full day tomorrow. "I'll be here from 7:30 a.m. until about 4 p.m.," Teska said with a sigh. Although most people might be able to work some turkey-time in around that schedule, Teska said he isn't as fortunate.
"My husband works the night shift at West Side Foods in Hunts Point. So we really don't have time to celebrate on Thursday," Teska said. "But we move our celebration to Friday where we eat turkey and go shopping," she said with a laugh.
Although Teska expressed some disappointment about having to work on Thanksgiving, she and her staff are more than willing to do it.
"It's our job to make their holiday special, and we're all happy to give up our holiday to make theirs."
