Port Chester Man: Pope’s Declining Health Is Evident

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. ? Port Chester resident Dan Stuart thinks Pope Benedict XVI's decision to step down, announced Monday, was the wise thing to do.

Stuart said he could see that the Pope's health was deteriorating.

“He was starting to go. You could tell,” he said.

Benedict, who was elected on April 19, 2005, said he was resigning because of “lack of strength and body," according to published reports.

He is the first Pope to resign since Gregory XII in 1415.

Benedict, the 265th Pope, serves as both sovereign of the Vatican City State and head of the Catholic Church.

His last day as pontiff will be Feb. 28.
