Port Chester Man Arraigned in Poningo St. Homicide

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. — Port Chester resident Julio Cortez, 53, was arraigned Tuesday in connection with the Feb. 7 fatal stabbing of Carlos Guiracocha of Port Chester. 

Cortez is charged with one count of second-degree murder, one count of first-degree manslaughter and a misdemeanor for criminal possession of a weapon. He faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison.

At approximately 3:55 p.m. on Feb. 7, Port Chester Police said they recieved a call of a man lying on the sidewalk on Poningo Street. Upon arrival, the patrol officer discovered Guiracocha, 23, lying face down on the steps of the entrance of 131 Poningo St.

Police said the patrolman turned the body over and discovered blood and a single stab wound to the chest. Emergency Medical Services announced Guiracocha dead on arrival.

Investigators found a large kitchen knife and empty beer bottles near the victim's slain body. The District Attorny's office says video surveillance showed the two men arguing before the stabbing.

On Feb. 27, Port Chester Village Justice Peter Sisca remanded the case to Westchester County Court.

The next court date is set for May 8.
