Edgar Cabrera, who works in Port Chester, said anyone who plays in New York has to be prepared for the harsh New York crowds.
“Lots of the games are like that. They love you today. Tomorrow, if you’re not doing so good, then they’re booing you,” he said. “I’m not a Mets fan, but anyone who plays in New York, they gotta concede to the fans.”
Ken Weisberger, of White Plains, is a season ticket holder for the New York Giants, and said it’s not just Mets fans who give their teams a hard time.
“I’ve been to games in Denver or Colorado City and they cheer the whole time and they’re cheering for their team whether they’re winning or losing,” he said. “Not in New York. In New York you gotta earn it.”
Hudgens told MLB.com the Mets players struggle at home because the fans are so tough on them. He cited fans booing Curtis Granderson for getting off to a slow start.
In addition to the Mets, Giants and Knicks, Weisberger said he also roots for the Rangers, who he said faced a similar circumstance in the team’s last game against the Canadiens.
“Watching the Ranger game and the crowd is really silent until they get a power play or until they score a goal. It’s not loud the whole game,” he said.
Jennifer Mosqueda, who used to live in Greenwich and was shopping at Costco in Port Chester Tuesday, disagreed with Hudgen’s comments.
“The Mets are the most forgiving, understanding, stand-by-your-team kind of fan in all of Major League Baseball,” she said. “I think it was probably an impulsive emotional response. Mets are diehard. They bleed blue and orange and they’re great fans.”
Erica Ambrocio, of Greenwich, agreed, saying the Mets downturn has weeded out any bandwagon fans.
“I think if you’re a bandwagon fan in New York you’re going to go see a Yankees game,” she said. “So, I feel like if you’re going to a Mets game you’re going to be a Mets fan. I don’t think you really find bandwagon Mets fans, just because they haven’t been winning.”
Port Chester High School students Stephon Rush and Xavier Tyson said they are not fans of any New York sports teams.
“It’s hard nose people,” Tyson said. “They expect greatness from their team.”
