The increased parking fee for meters went into effect on June 1. Adopted in late April, the measure increases the parking meter fees from 25 cents per 20 minutes to 25 cents per 15 minutes, effectively raising the rate from 75 cents per hour to a dollar per hour. The change has already gone into effect on all digital parking meters, and coin-operated parking meters are being modified to reflect the increase. The modification to coin-operated meters is expected to be completed by July 1, according to the village.

Parking meters will also be in operation longer. Currently parking meters are in effect from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., but that time will soon be extended to 9 p.m. The enforcement of this change will begin once the village installs signs reflecting the new hours of operation.

The change in meter rates and times is expected to generate around $427,000, according to the Village Board of Trustees. The changes were implemented in April because officials believe that it will help increase revenue to the village without raising property taxes, and shift some of the burden for additional revenue to people from other towns who visit Port Chester. Some businesses took issue with the extended hours, believing it could drive away customers.

The Board is also considering increasing the maximum number of hours that a car can be parked at a meter. The maximum is currently two hours, but that may change to three hours. The Board will vote on the measure at its June 17 meeting, and the new hours would be enforced once proper signs are installed.
