NEW CANAAN, Conn. — A New Canaan man will spend three years behind bars for supplying the heroin that caused the fatal overdose of his 25-year-old son last year, according to the New Canaan News.

Mark Lynch, 58, who had pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide and sale of narcotics, was sentenced Friday in Stamford Superior Court to three years in prison and seven years of special parole, the New Canaan News said.

Chris Lynch was found dead the morning of Sept. 25, 2016, in his father's New Canaan home, police said. Mark Lynch told officers that he had shared four folds of heroin from his own stash with his son the night before, police said. He later retracted that statement, police said.

At the sentencing Friday, prosecutor Richard Colangelo read a letter from Chris Lynch’s mother, Pam Bacco, saying that her ex-husband, Mark Lynch, had shown no remorse since their son’s death and didn’t contribute to his funeral expenses, according to the New Canaan News.

When asked by Judge John Blawie to make a statement,  Mark Lynch said, "Chris was my best friend. ... I miss him dearly. ... I’ve felt really, really terrible about the whole thing for over a year and I always will,” the New Canaan News said.

The State Medical Examiner's Office ruled that Chris Lynch died of acute heroin intoxication. He had recently returned to his hometown of New Canaan after living in Colorado with his mother, police said.

In the original arrest warrant, New Canaan police said that Mark Lynch knew that his son was working to kick a drug habit and was attending counseling and treatment.

"That as far as all/he was concerned, his son was clean, sober, and beginning to turn his life around at the time of his arrival in Connecticut. That Mark Lynch, with extreme recklessness, did disregard these facts and instead of telling his own son to stay away from him — because he himself was not well and he would seriously endanger his son's recovery and treatment — did the exact opposite," and provided his son with heroin that killed him, the arrest warrant said.
