Joining the plan’s network will expand MKMG’s strategic relationship with Universal American, parent company of Today’s Options, and further demonstrate the medical group’s commitment to serving the area’s Medicare patient population.

MKMG is a multi-specialty medical group that provides medical care in 40 different locations throughout lower Hudson Valley in New York. MKMG has more than 400 physicians representing 40 different medical specialties and is an independent clinical affiliate of Massachusetts General Hospital. Universal American offers Medicare Advantage plans in New York, Texas and Maine, and, through its subsidiary company, Collaborative Health Systems, is the largest sponsor of Medicare Shared Savings Program Accountable Care Organizations (MSSP ACO). For the past three years, Collaborative Health Systems and MKMG have collaborated in an MSSP ACO.

“Our goal is to always provide outstanding clinical care to our patients. This is an exciting evolution of our relationship with Universal American and a new way to pursue our shared vision of value-based medicine,” said Scott D. Hayworth, MD, President and CEO of MKMG. “We share the mission of finding collaborative ways to improve patient health and reduce healthcare costs. MKMG is committed to advancing health for our senior patients, and we are pleased to be in a position to provide them with access to new health plan options that value preventive care and foster the patient-physician relationship.”

Universal American Chairman and CEO Richard A. Barasch added, “We have built our business model around the concept that physicians are in the best position to drive significant improvements in the quality and cost of healthcare for Medicare beneficiaries. Our expanded relationship with MKMG allows us to extend our affordable, high-quality Medicare Advantage plans to Medicare beneficiaries in this region while working hand-in-hand with dedicated doctors who deliver outstanding clinical care.”

Medicare Advantage plans now account for 16 million people in the U.S. – almost one third of all people with Medicare. Studies have shown that Medicare Advantage plans can improve the quality of care for Medicare patients, as illustrated by increased utilization of preventive care and decreased re-hospitalization rates among enrolled populations.
