WESTCHESTER, N.Y. – Gov. Andrew Cuomo is warning residents to prepare for severe thunderstorms and possible tornadoes that could pass through the state Thursday.

The National Weather Service briefed state officials on the approaching storms Wednesday and declared a moderate risk of severe weather for the state.

As a result, the State Emergency Operations Center will be activated Thursday at 1 p.m.

The National Weather Service is calling for a chance of showers and thunderstorms Thursday, mainly after 5 p.m. Some storms could be severe, with large hail, damaging winds and heavy rain. It will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 91 degrees.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely Thursday night, mainly before 10 p.m. It will be cloudy overnight with a low around 75 degrees.

“I urge all New Yorkers to take caution and pay attention to local radio and television reports for the latest information on the progress of these summer storms," said Cuomo said in the statement. "Proper precautions undertaken now can help ensure that the strong winds and heavy rain cause as little damage as possible and that families and individuals are kept safe from harm."

New York State Office of Emergency Management Director Steven Kuhr said families and individuals should have an emergency kit and an emergency plan in place. Emergency kit should include items such as non-perishable food, water, a portable radio, flashlights and extra batteries. Pay attention to Emergency Alert System (EAS) messages that carry local information and emergency orders, such as evacuation or travel restrictions.
