Fireworks Prompt Residents Near Metropolis Country Club To Fear Attack

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- Residents who live near Metropolis Country Club called Town of Greenburgh police Sunday night concerned they were under some kind of attack.

It turns out that the country club, located at 289 Dobbs Ferry Road (Route 100B), was exploding fireworks for its private club members.

The golf club had the proper permits, according to Greenburgh Supervisor Paul Feiner, but neither he nor other Town Board members were notified or they would have alerted residents in advance of the loud fireworks display.

Feiner said he will require all future fireworks permit holders to post lawn signs at least a week before the event to warn neighbors.

"Some residents thought we were under attack,'' Feiner said. "I received a number of emails and phone calls from residents concerned about the noise, smoke and shaking from the fireworks that took place tonight."

Feiner said one resident sent an email that read: "For 20 minutes tonight, I felt like I lived through World War II. There were the loudest pounding and cracks of what sounded like bombs and what I came to find out were fireworks. I could smell the smoke, my townhouse and heart shook and my backyard lit up. I am not a nervous person, but it seemed so loud and close that I was quite scared and prompted to call 911, which I have never before done."

Another resident wrote: "Plates are shaking on the wall in Poet's Corner - the explosions are NOTHING that I have ever heard at a fireworks display. Called the police dept. and found out who is doing it. This needs to be re-thought. Living here 25 years and never heard anything like that -- it sounded as if we were under attack by missiles."
