PORT CHESTER, N.Y. -- Jennisy Mercado sat down with her daughter, Samantha, in Thomas A. Edison School's auditorium among many other parents gathered for back to school night on Thursday.
"It's good that I get to know what's going on with the school," said Mercado.
Samantha, 6, is in second grade and still developing reading, writing and basic math skills. Her teacher, Ms. Amaral, said new subjects like science and social studies are being introduced and are mostly focused on developing language skills. She added that the school is using the "Singapore model" to teach math, which is more visual and easier to understand for young children.
Mercado got to sit down in her daughter's classroom and learn about the curriculum for the year.
Samantha said she likes doing addition, and her mom thinks that she writes very imaginative sentences for her vocabulary assignments, but that she could work on her spelling.
"They've been helping her out, getting her where she needs to be," Mercado said about the teachers and school staff.
