Westchester County's only literary journal, The Westchester Review, has announced that while the submission deadline is fast approaching, there is still time for experienced and emerging Westchester writers to showcase their work in the journal's 2012 issue.
The nonprofit magazine was started in 2007 by local writer and Mount Kisco native JoAnn Terdiman as a way to illuminate the literary prowess in the county.
"I kept meeting all these incredible writers, and I began to realize we have such immense talent," Terdiman said. "I began to ask myself, with the diminution of the popular literary magazines, where was the outlet for these people? Where was a local outlet people could be identified with?"
Not finding anything of substance, Terdiman decided she would create a literary magazine dedicated to showcasing the talent of Westchester. The response was immediate, as more than 350 people showed up to the journal's first public reading.
Terdiman said that a staff of six editors reads every word of every submission, and will work with writers if they feel a submission is promising but a just a little too rough around the edges.
This year, for the first time, the journal is holding a Writers Under 30 Contest dedicated to showcasing the work of some of the county's younger, less experienced writers. The deadline for writers to submit three poems or a 5,000-word short story is June 1. Terdiman said the journal has already received 100 contest submissions.
Weve had such a flood of young people writing, and we want to get them in," Terdiman said. "Our aim is to help all of our writers get as much exposure as they can."
