Port Chester Restaurant Reflects on Move

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. - When Mary Ann's Mexican Restaurant in Port Chester decided to relocate from its original location to the downtown area on North Main Street last April, not all of the establishment's regulars were thrilled about the move.

"You know you get stuck in your ways," Manager Jim Habinowski said. "There might be a few who haven't come around, but for the most part we've sustained almost all of our regulars."

Mary Ann's, which began in Manhattan in the early 80s, had been at its previous location on the Boston Post Road for more than 15 years. While business was good at the previous location, Habinowski said, the situation wasn't ideal.

"We were corralled in what was predominantly a fast food district and people thought we were just another fast food place," Habinowski said. "That really fueled our decision to start looking."

When space in downtown Port Chester opened up, Habinowski said that the restaurant’s owners, Eddie and Gloria Globakar, jumped at the opportunity. Since Mary Ann's relocated last year, it has invested more than a quarter of a million dollars in the property, but Habinowski claims that so far it's been worth it.

"People are discovering us for the first time, and there's been a lot of new faces," he said. "We've also expanded in a lot of ways."

While the move allowed Mary Ann's an opportunity to upgrade its space, it has also decided to spruce up the menu by adding new appetizers and entrees. Habinowski claims that what makes Mary Ann's unique is its ability to blend elements of authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex.

"There is plenty of Latin representation down here," Habinowski said. "But no one is really offering what we're offering."

Mary Ann's is located on North Main Street in Port Chester and offers happy hour specials from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. Sunday through Friday. For more information visit the website.
