The event raised awareness and funding for the program, a non-discriminatory, free grocery shopping and case management service designed to meet the physical, emotional, and social needs of housebound Greenwich citizens who are 60 years of age or older.

It was run in partnership with neighborhood supermarkets and community organizations.

Participants included A&P, Kings, Stop & Shop, and Balducci’s, as well as the Senior Center of Greenwich, JFS Board members , members of the Greenwich High School Generation to Generation Club, and the JCC Teen Action Committee.

Elyse Brown, SFS Program Director, presented the first SFS Shopper of the Year Award to Chris Bisceglia of Port Chester, N.Y. The award was based on client nominations and serves to acknowledge the best example of how a shopper makes their clients feel safe, cared for and connected.

SFS has served the elderly neighbors of Greenwich since 1986, and currently the program provides shopping and support services to 180 seniors each year.

There is no income requirement to participate in the program, however 90 percent of participating seniors are considered low income by Community Development Block Grant guidelines, and many do not have other regular support systems in their lives.

Over the year, JFS hears the following repeatedly, “I don’t know what I would do without Supermarketing for Seniors; you are so important for my life.”
