PORT CHESTER, N.Y. Ron Conarroe gasses up his Prius at Tees Services on North Main Street because of the friendly service he gets there.
"I find they [Tee's] has a country feel to it, the Greenwich resident said. I'm the kind of person that wants to do business with a mom and pop store. They give me a good feeling, of when people were friendly; everything wasn't a franchise or major chain. It [Tee's] has a more personal feel, and I crave that kind of personal connection. And the prices are pretty good, very competitive."
During early morning rush hour traffic, Bob Thalaheimers station on North Main Street is easy to spot, thanks to the long lines drawn by some of the lowest gas prices in town -- $3.99 per gallon last weekend,
Monday and Friday are the busiest days of the week, Thalaheimer said. Monday is especially horrendous, though.
Thalaheimer has co-owned Tees with his wife since 1968 and has built up a loyal clientele.
He said the station serves an average of more than of 500 customers on some days. He sets his pumps based on the market rate. He said that offering a consistently low price per gallon gained him a large clientele, which in turn earns him enough profit to keep prices down.
A woman putting gas in her car this week summed it up by saying she came to the station because she liked the people running it and that it was a full-service station
