Letter to the Editor: Support Blanca Lopez for Port Chester-Rye BOE

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. -- TheDailyPortChester.com accepts original, signed letters to the editor. Letters may be emailed to llavoie@mainstreetconnect.us.

Dear Editor:

I would like to add my voice to the chorus of people urging voters to re-elect Blanca P. López to the Board of Education of the Port Chester-Rye Union Free School District. She has earned another term on the school board with her strong leadership as the Board President in a very difficult year.

One area where Ms. López has been particularly effective is mobilizing the community to lobby for more state aid. She was an integral part of the successful effort this year to convince the New York State Legislature and Governor Cuomo to allocate $200 million to general education state aid instead of establishing a competitive grant program that would only help a few select school districts. That change resulted in another $374,000 in desperately needed funds for the Port Chester Schools. We need Ms. López’s experience and energy in the continuing fight to secure relief from unfunded state mandates.

The taxpayers in Port Chester and Rye Brook who live in our school district will also benefit from her in-depth knowledge of school finances. Ms. López has participated in exhaustive line-by-line reviews of the budget the last three years and has helped to draft board policies that ensure that every dollar is spent wisely. She is also uniquely qualified to help the school district pursue opportunities to secure additional resources and reduce costs by entering into shared service agreements with other school districts, community organizations and local governments.

Vote for Blanca López on May 15. We cannot afford to lose her leadership and experience.

Sincerely,

Jim Taylor
