'Good Girls Revolt,' By North Salem Author, Is Turned Into Amazon Pilot

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -- For those still mourning the end of "Mad Men," take note: Amazon is testing the pilot of "Good Girls Revolt," a fictional dramatization of what it was like to work at Newsweek -- from a women's perspective -- in the late 1960s.

The pilot -- viewers will be asked to vote to see if more shows will be ordered -- is based on the PublicAffairs book, "The Good Girls Revolt" by North Salem resident and author Lynn Povich.

The book, which came out in 2012, details the sex discrimination and subsequent lawsuit that took place at Newsweek where writers like Nora Ephron, Jane Bryant Quinn, Ellen Goodman, and Susan Brownmiller, all aspiring journalists, were told, “If you want to be a writer, go somewhere else.”

On March 16, 1970, the day Newsweek published a cover story on the fledgling feminist movement, 46 female employees, spearheaded in part by Povich, charged the magazine with discrimination in hiring and promotion.

It was the first class action lawsuit by professional women–- the first by women journalists––and it inspired other women to follow suit.

Povich admits she's excited about the series (she's read the pilot but hasn't seen the episode), but is quick to point out it's a fictional account of what took place.

"Newsweek" is, instead, "News of the Week," and the women portrayed look nothing like her and her colleagues at the time. The actresses in the pilot include Genevieve Angelson (Backstrom), Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect), Erin Darke (We Need to Talk About Kevin), Joy Bryant (Parenthood) and Grace Gummer.

"It’s not exactly the specific story, but the spirit of it reflects where we were at the time and what we did," said Povich. “It’s about a group of young woman at this magazine coming to consciousness, realizing that things are not the way they should be.”

The show, which airs Thursday, Nov. 5, is a co-production with TriStar Television, and is written by Dana Calvo (Made in Jersey), directed by Liza Johnson (Return), and executive produced by Calvo, Lynda Obst (Interstellar), Darlene Hunt (The Big C), Don Kurt (Justified) and Jeff Okin (Dark Skies, Stanley Park).
