Former Port Chester Fire Chief Hansen Dies at 67

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. - Neils R. Hansen, a former Port Chester fire chief, died Nov. 13 at the age of 67.

Mr. Hansen was born Apr. 8, 1944 in Port Chester to the late Neils and Arline Tucker Hansen. After graduating from Port Chester High School, he served in the U.S. Navy. On Mar. 25, 1967, he married Barbara Wortley at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where he was a parishioner.

Most recently of Oxford, Conn., Hansen worked as an electrician and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 501/3 in White Plains. 

He was a member of the Mellor Engine and Hose Comapny No. 3 of the Port Chester Volunteer Fire Company for 49 years. There he held many offices, including serving as second assistant chief, fire chief from 1981 to 1982 and first assistant chief. 

He is survived by his son Lee Hansen and wife Karin of Naugatuck, Conn., his daughter Suzi Eckert and husband Bon of Trumbull, Conn., his brothers Richard Hansen of Port Chester and Robert Hansen of Pennsylvania, his sisters Arline Hansen and Gladys Vanderbeck of Fort Myers, Fla. and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Barbara on May 25, 2009.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday at Craft Memorial Home in Port Chester. A funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Rye Brook. A committal service will follow at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale.
