Ex-United Hospital Chief of Medicine Edelman Dies

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. - Former chief of medicine at United Hospital, Dr. Jerry Edelman, died Jan. 1. He was 83.

He was born Jul. 31, 1928 in Brooklyn to Samuel and Gussie Edelman. A resident of White Plains, he taught at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, N.Y. and Bronx V.A. Hospital.

A former chief of medicine, Dr. Edelman was also president of staff at United Hospital in Port Chester. He held a private practice in Mamaroneck for 35 years.

Dr. Edelman served as a captain in the U.S. Army, where he was the personal physician for Syngman Rhee, the first president of South Korea. An accomplished clarinetist, he enjoyed woodworking, fishing and boating at his second home in Tolland, Mass.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, the former Riva Kline, his children Laurie (Thomas) Kyzivat, Jeffrey (Ming-Ming) and Hai (Fang-Tao), his sisters Jean Damashek and Rita (Bernard) Blutfield and five grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at The Chapel in the Woods at Congregation Kol-Ami in White Plains, followed by interment at Sharon Gardens at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla.
