Along with this spicy rendition of the history of the Jewish delicatessen and the background that reflects the heart of its vital ethnic history, the Alamo will be serving pastrami sandwiches, pickles, egg creams, and matzo ball soup.
Produced and directed by Erik Greenberg Anjou, the movie follows Ziggy Gruber, a third-generation delicatessen man - -- his uncle and great-uncle owned Berger’s in the diamond district, and the Woodrow Deli on Long Island. His grandfather owned the famous Rialto Delicatessen on Broadway, with Ziggy stuffing cabbages atop a crate when he was eight. Now he is owner and maven (as well as a Yiddish-speaking French-trained chef) of one of the country’s top delis, Kenny and Ziggy’s in Houston.
The story also features corned beef meccas like Carnegie, Katz’s, 2nd Avenue Deli, Nate ‘n Al, and Canter’s, as well as some of the great connoisseurs of deli including Jerry Stiller, Alan Dershowitz, Freddie Klein, Fyvush Finkel, and Larry King.
And, it has a local connection: Ronnie Dragoon, who is in the movie, owns Ben's Kosher Deli, which recently opened on Central Park Avenue in Scarsdale.
The movie is a special showing presented by the Westchester Cinema Club, which claims to be America's longest-running film club. The film is introduced by host and moderator David Schwartz, Chief Curator, Museum of the Moving Image. Go here for information.
