Port Chester Prepares For 'Strong' Coastal Storm

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. - Sound Shore communities were cautioned to be on high alert Monday, as a strong coastal storm is expected to bring heavy winds, rain and potential flooding to the lower Hudson Valley.

Throughout Sound Shore, local officials were busy on Monday preparing for the Nor'easter, warning residents to watch out for downed trees or power lines and to avoid any non-essential travel through Tuesday morning, when the storm is expected to subside some.

There is the possibility of power outages overnight, which can be reported directly to Con Edison at 1-800-75-CONED or on their website.

In New Rochelle, Mayor Noam Bramson cautioned that all residents should safeguard their properties, especially lightweight items outdoors. Anyone with an active building permit should secure building materials. Garbage should not be put curbside until Tuesday morning.

Nearby, in Pelham, the school district canceled all after school athletic and evening activities due to the expected inclement weather, though they were able to observe a normal dismissal as Mother Nature held off the inclement weather.

Mamaroneck residents have been warned to prepare for high winds, with gusts reading upwards of 60 mph. Residents can stay up to date about conditions by visiting the town website. All residents have been advised to ensure their homes are weather proof and that outdoor gutters and drains are clean and prepared for the heavy rain. They should double-check backup generators and check flashlights and radios for batteries.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures are going to hover at around 40 degrees in the area overnight. 30 to 40 mph winds are anticipated with as many as two inches of rain on the way. A flood watch, coastal flood warning and high wind warning are in effect in Southern Westchester.
