GettingOnTravel (GOT) is a multi-authored webzine designed to inform and inspire luxury travelers over age 50. According to Co-Creator and Owner Irene S. Levine, the site was launched in mid-April after identifying a gap in the market.

"Travelers over the age of 50 have more disposable income and time to travel than any other age group," she said, with AARP research showing that 99 percent of this population takes at least one leisure trip per year.

"We were also mindful of the silent generation, born between 1925 and 1945, who are often ignored by the travel industry but that remain active travelers due to their improved health and increased longevity."

Levine and her Canadian business partner Janice Mucalov were friendly competitors who both produced award-winning travel blogs -- Levine's is moretimetotravel.com while Mucalov's is sandinmysuitcase.com. Both take at least 10 to 12 trips a year and do freelance travel writing for other print and online publications.

They realized, however, that as successful as they were as individual bloggers, they couldn’t produce enough content to have a large enough reach to compete with the big guys.

Eventually, and with the help of other fellow travel writers, they figured it was best to pool their resources. Hence, the new site, with a fresh perspective and the hope of attracting advertisers.

They have 19 writers contributing content aside from them, two of whom -- Laura E. Kelly and Lori Tripoli are also from this area --- Mount Kisco and Bedford, respectively.

“Admittedly, travelers at midlife and beyond can’t be defined by age alone," added Levine.

"They are a diverse lot with a range of interests and energy levels. Thus, GettingOnTravel reviews span from pampered travel in sumptuous settings to active, soft adventure trips. Each article is followed by specific tips so mature travelers can evaluate the appeals and drawbacks of various destinations, cruises, and resorts.”

As for where to plan your next trip, Levine offers the following suggestions.

  • For experiencing La Dolce Vita: Bologna, Italy. An under-rated city with the best food in Italy, a rich history, and one of the most magnificent piazzas. It may not have the same number of art or historic treasures as Florence or Rome, but it’s devoid of crowds and queues.
  • For sheer convenience: A cruise anywhere. Whether it’s an ocean cruise or river cruise, there’s something to be said for only having to pack and unpack once and to have all the logistics of travel between cities taken care of for you. It’s a great way to discover places to which you would like to return.
  • For pure relaxation: Los Cabos, Mexico. Unbeatable weather and an abundance of luxury properties with fine dining options.
