RYE BROOK, N.Y. -- The village of Rye Brook will host a special ceremony and tree planting Friday morning in celebration of Arbor Day.
The brief ceremony will take place at Harkness Park on King Street at 9 a.m. Friday. Officials will plant an American elm, the official tree of Massachusetts, and a Charter oak, the official tree of Connecticut. The trees will be planted in support of the families and victims of the Boston Marathon bombings and the December shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.
This year the Arbor Day Foundation named Rye Brook a Tree City USA for the 18th year in a row. The village received the distinction for meeting the organization's four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance or proclamation.
