Just 90 miles from Florida, over a half-century of political differences and restrictions have made Cuba seem like a world away.

“Cuba is to me an untold story, and every photograph provides another chapter, another layer of depth to its narrative," said photographer Joann Cancro, whose exhibit, "From the Rooftops to the Streets," runs at Rye Arts Center, at 51 Milton St. until Oct. 22.

Her work captures colonial Spanish architecture and an enduring spirit of Cuban people, according to the Rye Arts Center.

The photos explore cityscapes in disrepair, dancers and musicians, American cars and people going about their lives.

Even though diplomatic relations have softened, there are still travel restrictions, and most Americans "may never have the opportunity to experience the country as it is today," Cancro said.

Cancro has been photographing for more than 20 years. Her works have been published in The New York Times and featured in National Geographic Traveler’s Portrait Contest.

The photographs documenting Cancro’s journeys through Cuba were exhibited at The Lake Placid Center for the Arts earlier this year.

This exhibition is the centerpiece of a series of events at The Rye Arts Center called "Cuba! A Hot Celebration," which celebrates Cuba’s culture through the arts.

Events include:

  • Reception with JoAnn Cancro: Saturday, 3-5 p.m.
  • Cocomama Dance Party: Saturday, 7 p.m.
  • Family Times In Cuba Workshop: Saturday, Oct. 1, 3 p.m.
  • The Ground Glass Meeting: Exploring Cuba, Wednesday, Oct. 19, 7 p.m.
  • Book signing with JoAnn Cancro: Saturday, Oct. 22, 1 p.m.
