Port Chester Theater Turns Back Clock With '80s Band

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. --  The '80s are alive and well and will be celebrated at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester on Friday, Jan. 9, when Jessie's Girl, with a special appearance by Howard Jones, a founding father of early '80s synth-pop, takes the stage.

The is the fourth "Turn Back the Cap" event for the 88-year-old theater, which is big into celebrating its past as well as its present.

Jessie's Girl has been called a “killer '80s band” by Huffington Post while Howard Jones is known for songs like "What Is Love?," "Things Can Only Get Better" and "Everlasting Love."

To file under the "what goes around comes around," Jessie's Girl's manager and show producer Marcus Linial grew up in New Rochelle and promoted his first concert at The Cap in 1988. Linial went on to promote six other shows there in '88 and '89.

And now he and his band are doing the time warp. And yes, people dress in '80s attire to attend (though not required). It was a fun time, Jenna O'Gara, one of the band's three lead singers, said of the '80s era -- and the nostalgic attraction lingers today. "It was a time of big hair, bold colors and music you can’t help but sing along to."

The show, however, doesn't just appeal to "'80s babies," she said. At one performance a 10-year-old was belting out “Don’t Stop Believin'” and on another occasion O'Gara's grandmother came on stage for “Girl’s Just Wanna Have Fun."

"Our show is the ultimate party for folks of all ages," she said.

To that end, there's a "Flashdance" medley as well as tunes such as “Anyway You Want It," “Love Shack,” “Under Pressure” and “Working for the Weekend." (In other words, bring your leg warmers.)

The show starts at 8 p.m. with tickets selling for $30 and $50. The Capitol Theatre is at 149 Westchester Ave. For more information, call 914-937-4126 or visit www.thecapitoltheatre.com/
