PORT CHESTER, N.Y. -- Port Chester High School will hold the third annual Walk for Gabby Saturday in memory of former student Gabrielle Acevedo.
Acevedo graduated from Port Chester High School in 2007. She was a senior at Nazareth College when she was involved in a head-on car crash in Pittsford, N.Y. in January 2011. She died of her injuries shortly after at the age of 21. She was majoring in speech pathology. Acevedo was active in the Port Chester community, working as a lifeguard and counselor at the Port Chester Recreation day camp and as a member of the Anthony Faust Mentoring Program.
In addition to the walk, the day will feature refreshments, raffles of t-shirts, book bags and bracelets, as well as a kickball tournament. All donations for the event will go towards the Gabrielle Acevedo Scholarship Fund. Last year's walk raised more than $6,500 for the scholarship, which goes to Port Chester High School students to study communication disorders or special education.
Registration for the walk will begin at 9 a.m. and the opening ceremony will be held at 10 a.m.
