The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night Walk raises funds to support blood cancer research, and provides services to patients and their families. Each Light The Night Walk honors local blood cancer survivors and commemorates individuals who have lost their lives to these diseases.
Cervinka was just over 5 years old when he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). He was admitted to the pediatric oncology unit of the Yale-New Haven Smilow Cancer Hospital on Oct. 4, 2013. He underwent surgery there to place a port in his chest and had a bone marrow aspirate on Oct. 6, 2013. William started treatment the next day.
Cervinka’s parents started a team for the 2013 Westchester Light The Night Walk, called William’s Warriors. More than 50 friends and family members walked in the boy’s honor and raised nearly $10,000.
Since it began in 1999, the national program of more than 200 walks across North America each fall has helped LLS invest more than $1 billion in research to advance breakthrough cancer treatments that are saving lives today. Last year, the Westchester Walk raised more than $815,000. This year’s goal for the event is to raise $890,000.
