Cancer-fighting t-shirts say so much for Fairview firefighter, dispatcher, 21

HOW YOU CAN HELP: A little over a week ago, 21-year-old volunteer firefighter and full-time police dispatcher Jason Pinzone of Fairview completed a 5K run — after completing his first full week of radiation treatments for throat cancer.

This Tuesday is the deadline for reserving a special custom-made t-shirt showing support for the popular East Bergen emergency services worker.

Fairview Police Officer Gino Sculco is leading the charge to boost Pinzone, who he said “continues to work towards the ultimate goal of becoming a police officer” — just like his father, retired borough Police Chief John Pinzone.

The t-shirt, created with the younger Pinzone’s permission and assistance, sells for $20.

“All proceeds will be a donation straight to Jason,” Sculco said.

“This website is just to put your order in,” Sculco said. “You will be asked to hold all payments until I personally deliver the shirt to you.

“Please go to link and order a shirt, for yourself, your friends and family. Pass the link around and lets all try to give Jason the support he needs.”

Pinzone had been experiencing headaches and severe nosebleeds when he wsa diagnosed in August with nasopharyngeal carcinoma, Sculco said.

The lifelong Fairview resident — a volunteer firefighter in town and a full-time Cliffside Park dispatcher — was placed in an eight-week radiation treatment program, with a simultaneous chemotherapy treatment every 21 days.

Two weeks in, Sculco told Pinzone, he “smashed it into little tiny pieces.” The hope is he can continue to progress.

Meanwhile, the number of shirts continues to climb, with orders from Fairview, Cliffside Park, Fort Lee, Leonia, Palisades Park, Edgewater, Bogota, New Milford, Carlstadt, Maywood — even North Carolina, Illinois and California.

“I thought we were going to get a few t-shirts, just like 20 – 30,” Sculco said, noting that 400 had been reserved going into this weekend. “Was I wrong or what? Schools, police and fire departments, military, borough employees — everyone wants in.

“I am not shocked,” he added. “It’s not about the shirt, nor the money. It is the outcome.

“It is up to us to make a statement. We are going to show the world what love is about.”
