Counting Crows Begins Tour At The Capitol Theatre

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. – Alt-rock legends the Counting Crows are kicking off a 14-city tour this fall at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester. Don’t expect a set-list coming out anytime soon says the band’s front man Adam Duritz.

“The best shows you play are songs you’re dying to play…” said Duritz. “We have so many songs, it’s really hard to decide between them. We play a pretty wide variety of stuff from every record.”

The longtime alternative rock band is best known for hit singles in the ‘90s like “Mr. Jones” and a Grammy nod for its song, “Accidentally in Love,” featured in the movie Shrek 2.

The band has been touring on and off since March, with little time off in between. Just days before the tour’s launch, Duritz will co-present two days of free music at The Bowery Electric In Manhattan called The Outlaw Roadshow. Despite non-stop working, Duritz says he’s not burnt out yet.

“It’s a very weird life and not always that good for me that way, but I like the order of it, the structure. My life is a little unstructured, touring can be a relief from that,” said Duritz.

The band’s most recent album, Underwater Sunshine, was released in April as a compilation of cover songs including “Return of the Grevious Angel” by alt-country singer Gram Parsons and “The Ballad of El Goodo” by Big Star, a cult rock band fronted by Alex Chilton, a friend of Duritz who passed away one year before recording began on Underwater Sunshine.

“It’s kind of a weird thing when you consider how many great songwriters there are out there, it’s limiting to only work with one songwriter,” says Duritz, adding he was focused on a play he was writing while Underwater Sunshine was created. “We’ve been wanting to do this for a long time. I really enjoyed it. It really made us a better live band for some reason.”

The album was released on Counting Crows’ own label, which Durtiz says will continue. “After so many years dealing with [labels] who don’t want to believe the Internet exists, we would rather be independent and rely on our own merits,” he says.

A band made up of several members of Counting Crows, Tender Mercies as well as the Boston rock band Mean Creek will open for Counting Crows on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at The Capitol Theatre, located at 149 Westchester Avenue in Port Chester.

Tickets are $55 for general admission standing room on the floor or a reserved seat in the loge or balcony.
